Tsar Simeon was the son of Bulgarian Tsar Boris who sent an Air Force Officer to the Jordan River to obtain water for his baptism in the Orthodox faith. Boris, who had reluctantly agreed to join the Axis powers, died shortly after a meeting with Hitler in 1943 (many say he was assassinated because he continued to maintain diplomatic relations w Soviet Russia). Simeon ascended to the throne at only 6 years of age! His uncle Prince Kyril, Prime Minister Bogdan Filov, and Lt. General Nikola Mikhov of the Bulgarian Army were appointed regents. This event is commemorated on this very rare currency dated the same year and printed in Nazi Germany!! However, it did not circulate long. In September 1944, Stalin invaded and occupied Bulgaria!!

The 3 regents, and all members of the last three governments, Parliament deputies, heads of the army and eminent journalists were executed by the Communists in February 1945!!

The royal family—Queen Giovanna, Simeon, and his sister Maria-Louisa—remained at Vrana Palace near Sofia (on back of the 200). On 15 September 1946, a referendum was held in the presence of the Soviet army. It resulted in a 97% approval for republic and abolition of the monarchy, and the boy-king Simeon was deposed. He spent the next 50 years as Monarch in Exile!!

In 1996, he returned to Bulgaria after the fall of Communism. Simeon ran for the presidency - and won! He was prime minister from 2001-2005 during which time it joined NATO and he was awarded the Path to Peace Award. He is alive to this day, and remains the longest-lived Monarch from the WW2 era.
